Juan Tejedor Baron has pleaded guilty to the murder of 73-year-old Gary Ruby, whose body was found encased in concrete in a standalone bathtub in his $1.2 million home in Hawaii in March 2022.

Baron, who was 23 at the time, confessed to choking Ruby to death following a sexual encounter after learning of Ruby's HIV-positive diagnosis.

He attempted to make the death look like a suicide by using a kitchen knife to slit Ruby's wrists.

Baron and a friend fled Hawaii after the murder, but were arrested in Anaheim, Calif.

Baron now faces a minimum sentence of 20 years after pleading guilty to second-degree murder.

Giovonni Z. Pope, a U.S. citizen, received a sentence of 16 years and eight months for fatally stabbing his mother, a Department of Defense civilian stationed in Bahrain.

After the murder on Jan. 31, 2021, Pope removed evidence, fled in her car, and was later apprehended by Bahraini authorities.

Charged under the Military Extraterritorial Jurisdiction Act, Pope pleaded guilty to second-degree murder on Nov. 3, 2023.

Principal Deputy Assistant Attorney General Nicole M. Argentieri, U.S. Attorney Erek L. Barron, and investigators from the FBI and NCIS were involved in the case.
