A Wayne man, Joseph Michael Slocum Jr., has been charged with first-degree murder and felony firearm in the fatal shooting of his ex-girlfriend, 19-year-old Veronica Crain in Canton Township.

The incident occurred on Feb. 16 at a hotel, where Crain was found with a gunshot wound to the head and pronounced dead.

Slocum was later found injured in a car crash and taken to a hospital.

Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy emphasized the danger domestic violence victims face when trying to leave a relationship.

The case is set for a probable cause conference on May 3.

Christina Chatlos, 38, of Williamstown and Barre, died from a gunshot wound to the torso.

A 15-year-old boy from Springfield, Massachusetts has been charged with second-degree murder in connection with her death in a St. Johnsbury, Vermont parking lot.

The suspect was initially taken into custody on an unrelated warrant in Massachusetts and then extradited to Vermont.

The investigation began on Jan. 23 when Chatlos was found dead in a vehicle with apparent bullet holes.

Vermont State Police are still investigating the homicide.

The suspect is expected to be extradited to Vermont to face charges after appearing in juvenile court in Massachusetts.
