The disappearance of three men who left a North Carolina bar just before last call in December 1982 has stumped investigators for over 40 years.

However, the recent discovery of human remains in a car at the bottom of a creek is providing hope the case can be solved.

Search crews successfully pulled the car out of Jack's Creek in Washington, North Carolina on Feb.

The car, a 1975 Chevrolet Camaro, matches the car the men were last seen in after leaving a bar in Chocowinity, North Carolina.

The VIN on the car also matches, leading officials to conduct DNA testing on the remains recovered to confirm their identities.

Law enforcement agencies in the Big Bend area are collaborating to solve cold cases, with the recent establishment of the Big Bend Cold Case Task Force: No Case Forgotten, No Truth Untold.

Significant progress has been made in bringing closure to long-standing cold cases, including the resolution of the oldest cold case on record for the Tallahassee Police Department.

Another case involving the disappearance of Leslie McCoy is also being actively reviewed.

The task force encourages community members to come forward with any information that may aid in these investigations.
