More than three decades after the kidnapping and murder of Polly Klaas, Richard Allen Davis, the man convicted of killing her, is seeking to have his death sentence overturned.

Davis's lawyers argued in a Santa Clara County courtroom that a recent California law should be applied to his case, invalidating sentencing enhancements for certain prior convictions.

However, a prosecutor from Sonoma County contested this, stating that granting Davis a new penalty phase trial goes beyond the law's intended scope.

Polly's father, Marc Klaas, expressed the ongoing pain of reliving his daughter's tragic case, as the judge prepares to make a ruling on May 31.

Melissa Chrisman was sentenced to over 30 years in prison for pleading guilty to the murder of her baby, who was found frozen to death in 2003.

The case remained unsolved for many years until Chrisman's arrest in 2020, and she finally pleaded guilty to murder in 2023.

"Baby Daniel" was discovered by an 11-year-old with his umbilical cord still attached in a park.

Chrisman, who was 24 at the time, received a 55-year sentence with 23 years suspended.

"Baby Daniel" would have been almost 21 years old now.
